Malta is growing. Warehouse space isn’t.
Across industries, businesses are under increasing pressure to do more — faster, safer, and within increasingly constrained footprints. In this environment, warehouse design is no longer just about storage. It’s about performance, flow, and return on every square metre.
At SSL, we don’t just supply racking systems. We engineer warehouse environments — optimising space, movement, and operational efficiency to deliver measurable business impact.
The right racking system is always a balance between:
- Storage density
- Accessibility
- Operational flow
- Speed and throughput
Here’s a practical breakdown of the main systems and where they add the most value.
1- Selective Adjustable Pallet Racking — Maximum Accessibility
This is the most common and flexible system, offering direct access to every pallet position through adjustable beam levels.
It delivers full selectivity and fast picking, but with lower storage density compared to more compact systems.
Best use: wide SKU range, fast-moving goods, mixed inventory
Use it when: accessibility and operational flexibility are the priority over maximum space utilisation.
2- Very Narrow Aisle (VNA) Racking — Vertical SpaceOptimisation
VNA systems significantly reduce aisle widths and rely on specialised VNA trucks and guidance systems.
They enable high-density storage while maintaining direct access to every pallet position — making them ideal for constrained sites.
Best use: high-volume operations with limited floor space
Use it when: you need to maximise vertical capacity without sacrificing selectivity.
3- Double Deep Racking — Higher Density with Controlled Trade-Offs
Double deep systems store pallets two positions deep, increasing density while slightly reducing accessibility.
They require reach trucks and disciplined stock management.
Best use: medium SKU variety with higher volumes per SKU
Use it when: you want more density than selective racking, while maintaining partial selectivity.
4- Drive-In Racking — Maximum Bulk Storage
Forklifts enter the racking structure directly, storing pallets on rails rather than beams.
This delivers extremely high density but limited accessibility and increased handling risk.
It can be designed for:
- LIFO (Drive-in)
- FIFO (Drive-through)
Best use: large volumes of homogeneous stock
Use it when: storage density is more critical than frequent access.
5- High-Density Radio Shuttle Systems — Automated Deep Storage
A motorised shuttle moves pallets within deep lanes, removing the need for forklifts to enter the structure.
This improves safety, efficiency, and density compared to traditional drive-in systems.
Best use: high-volume SKUs, buffer storage, cold storage
Use it when: you need density with improved control and reduced handling movement.
6- Mobile Racking Systems — Maximum SpaceUtilisation
Racking is mounted on motorised bases that move along rails, opening aisles only when access is required.
This delivers the highest possible storage density, but slower access times.
Best use: high-value space, cold storage, low-turnover goods
Use it when: space optimisation is more important than speed.
7- Gravity (Pallet Flow) Racking — High Throughput FIFO
Pallets move automatically via gravity rollers from loading to picking sides, ensuring efficient stock rotation.
This supports high throughput operations but requires higher investment and less flexibility.
Best use: fast-moving goods with strict FIFO requirements
Use it when: speed, rotation, and flow are critical.
8- Push-Back Racking — Density with Operational Simplicity
Pallets are stored on nested carts that move along inclined rails, allowing multiple depth storage with LIFO operation.
It offers a strong balance between density and usability.
Best use: medium-turnover products
Use it when: you want density without operational complexity.
9- Cantilever Racking (Decked) — Long & Irregular Loads
Cantilever systems use horizontal arms supported by vertical columns, often with decking for smaller or irregular items.
They are designed for goods that do not fit standard pallet formats.
Best use: timber, pipes, furniture, long or mixed-length items
Use it when: standard pallet systems are not suitable for your product profile.
The Bottom Line — It’s Not About Racking. It’s About Design.
There is no universal “best” system.
The most common mistake we see is choosing racking based on convention, rather than operational reality.
The right solution depends on:
- SKU profile (fast vs slow-moving)
- Inventory depth per SKU
- Throughput requirements
- Space cost vs labour cost
In most high-performance warehouses, multiple systems are combined to create a tailored, hybrid environment that supports real operational needs.
